Coleoid cephalopods, a group encompassing octopuses, squid and cuttlefish, are the most intelligent invertebrates: Octopuses can open jars, squid communicate with their own Morse code and cuttlefish start learning to identify prey when they’re just embryos. In fact, coleoids are the only “animal lineage that has really achieved behavioral sophistication” other than vertebrates, said Joshua Rosenthal, a senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. This sophistication could be related to...
Scientists reviewing video from camera traps watched dumbfounded as a 16-pound badger worked four days to bury a 50-pound calf carcass. Badgers, carnivores native to the American West, are generally nocturnal and spend most of their time in burrows. They are known to cache food to eat later — squirrels and rabbits, typically. No one has ever seen a badger put away such a large hunk of meat....
At the top, two flesh-toned siphons swish water over massive gills. At the bottom, a slimy, eyeless head resembles a mix of wet lips and diseased tonsils. In between, a glistening gunpowder blue body stretches up to four feet long. Instead of eating, bacteria in the creature’s gills helps it suck energy from sulfur. The whole thing is sheathed in a tusklike tube created from its secretions of...

![[02/04, 4:07 pm] Ravindra Baba: *World Autism Awareness Day: Recognising Early Signs of Autism and Understanding Every Child’s Unique Journey*
*Dr Sharad Sharma, Additional Director, Pediatric Neurology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur*
*Jaipur, 2nd April 2026* : World Autism Awareness Day is observed on April 2nd each year. Established by the United Nations in 2007, the day aims to build awareness and promote acceptance of individuals on the autism spectrum. It highlights the importance of understanding neurodiversity and ensuring that every child is supported in a way that respects their unique needs. April is also recognised as Autism Awareness Month, with schools, healthcare providers and communities working together to create more inclusive environments.
The day underscores the importance of early recognition of autism and the role of timely intervention. It encourages open conversations, reduces stigma and promotes access to supportive care, education and therapies. Most importantly, it reminds us that early understanding can make a meaningful difference in a child’s developmental journey.
Dr Sharad Sharma, Additional Director, Pediatric Neurology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur said, “According to a 2021 study published in the Indian Journal of Paediatrics, the estimated prevalence of autism in India is around 1 in 68 children. However, many cases are still identified late. Recognising early signs and starting timely intervention can significantly improve developmental outcomes and quality of life.”
Early Signs to Watch For:
• Delayed speech or limited verbal communication
• Less eye contact or response to name
• Limited interest in social interaction or play
• Repetitive behaviors such as hand flapping or lining up objects
• Strong preference for routines; difficulty with changes
• Sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures or touch
Diagnosis:
• Signs are often noticed before the age of three
• Diagnosis is based on developmental patterns and behaviour,
• Screening tools and specialist assessments help in confirmation
• Early identification allows timely start of intervention and support
Autism Care and Support
Early and consistent support can significantly help children develop essential skills. Therapies such as behavioural, speech and occupational therapy play a key role in supporting their overall development. Creating structured routines and providing a supportive environment can enhance both learning and comfort. Equally important is active parental involvement and caregiver training, which strengthen progress and continuity of care. With the right support and guidance, many individuals on the autism spectrum can go on to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
World Autism Awareness Day is a reminder that recognizing the early signs of autism is not about labelling, but about enabling children to receive the care, understanding and opportunities they deserve at the right time.
